When you’re shopping for high-end fashion, you expect quality materials and craftsmanship to justify the high price tag, Right?
Well, I made recent discovery that shed light on a concerning trend in the luxury fashion industry, where appearances can be deceiving and labels misleading when it comes to textiles.
The Gucci Green “Wool” Skirt
Gucci, a name synonymous with luxury and quality, recently released a mid-length skirt marketed as a “Cotton wool blend” garment. Priced at a staggering 2,830 CAD (converted from €1,500), this forest green skirt with a floral jacquard pattern seems to embody the essence of high-end fashion. However, a closer look at the fabric composition reveals a startling truth.

The Devil does not only wear Prada… The Devil is in the Details Darling…
Upon examining the fabric breakdown, I found that the skirt is composed of:
56% Viscose (more than half it’s contents!)
31% Wool
13% Cotton

The primary material in this “cotton wool blend” skirt is viscose, a synthetic fabric commonly used in fast fashion, a la made in China at a fraction of the Gucci price.
Organic wool and cotton, the natural fibers one would expect to dominate in a luxury garment, make up less than half of the fabric composition these days. They’ve opted for cheaper materials that can be manufactured faster to keep up with the rapid pacing of online trends. This is why “trends” must die.
The Truth About Viscose:
Viscose, also known as rayon, is a semi-synthetic fiber derived from wood pulp. It can mimic the feel of natural fibers, it’s often chosen for its cost-effectiveness rather than its quality or sustainability. The prevalence of viscose in fast fashion is due to its cheap production costs and ability to imitate more expensive fabrics without actually being… expensive.
A More Authentic Alternative:
In stark contrast to Gucci’s offering, House of Bruar has a Ladies Classic Tweed Skirt in genuine wool alternative for those seeking authentic garments. Their collection of a-line pencil skirts all have natural fibers, with classic color options/prints available at a fraction of the Gucci price. I mean thousands of dollars less at $160.00 CAD per skirt. Yes, they are lined with polyester but in this world, you cannot win them ALL.
These classic herringbone pattern skirts not only offer better value for the price point but also provide the authentic 100% wool experience that more sustainable skin sensitive buyers seek.

What’s Your Price of Authenticity?
The disparity in pricing between the Gucci skirt and more authentic wool options is eye opening. While Gucci charges over 2,800 CAD for a primarily viscose skirt, House of Bruar offers genuine wool skirts at much more reasonable prices, some even under 100 CAD in other styles.
Transparency in Fashion:
This revelation raises important questions about transparency in the luxury fashion industry. Consumers paying premium prices for designer labels expect honesty about the materials used in their garments. The use of predominantly synthetic fibers in a skirt marketed as a “cotton wool blend” feels misleading, especially given the astronomical price point.
Making Informed Choices:
As consumers, it’s crucial to look beyond brand names and marketing tactics. Reading labels, understanding fabric compositions, and questioning the value proposition of luxury items are essential steps in making informed fashion choices. The Gucci skirt case serves as a reminder that high prices don’t always equate to high-quality, natural materials.

The fashion industry thrives on image and perception, but as savvy consumers, we must demand substance behind the style. Whether you’re investing in a designer piece or seeking out hidden gems from smaller retailers, prioritize authenticity, quality, and transparency. Remember, true luxury lies not in the label, but in the inherent quality and honesty of the product.
